Cheaper to Buy Than Rent? In most markets, YES!

The real estate data provider Trulia.com has released a report indicating that it is cheaper to buy than to rent in 98 of the nation’s 100 top metropolitan markets.

Based on asking prices for rental units and for-sale homes on Trulia.com between December 1, 2011 and February 29, 2012, the index shows the relative cost of renting versus buying for similar homes in similar neighborhoods.

According to the summary, only Honolulu and San Francisco have rentals that are largely cheaper than owning. The study especially pointed out that home prices have been pushed so low nationwide that even in New York, Los Angeles and Boston it is now cheaper to buy.
